How does OpusTel work?

How Does OpusTel Work?

OpusTel enables the use of a Swiss landline number via the OpusTel app on a smartphone. Calls are made over an internet connection, for example via Wi-Fi or mobile data.

This allows the Swiss landline number to be used while on the go and abroad, without incurring traditional international roaming charges for OpusTel telephony.

Calls can also be made to regular phone numbers on the public telephone network. Therefore, the person you are calling does not necessarily need to have the OpusTel app.

Encrypted Telephony

OpusTel uses SIPS, SRTP, and TLS, among other technologies, for secure communication. For calls between two OpusTel apps, communication is end-to-end encrypted.

This distinguishes OpusTel from conventional mobile and landline telephony and provides a telephony solution focused on privacy and secure communication.

What makes OpusTel special?

OpusTel combines several features that are usually found across different solutions:

  • Swiss provider
  • Swiss landline number
  • Smartphone app
  • iOS and Android
  • Encrypted telephony
  • Calls via Wi-Fi and mobile data
  • Usable worldwide
  • No roaming charges for OpusTel telephony
  • Calls to regular phone numbers
  • No OpusTel app required for the person you are calling when calling the public telephone network
  • Swiss servers
  • End-to-end encryption for OpusTel app-to-OpusTel app communication

In short: OpusTel is a Swiss telephony app that allows you to use a Swiss landline number on your smartphone. Calls work via Wi-Fi or mobile data, the service can be used worldwide, and it supports encrypted communication as well as calls to regular phone numbers.

Can OpusTel replace Skype?

When it comes to phone calls with a phone number, the OpusTel app can replace the Skype app. In fact, the OpusTel app is even better because the recipient sees a phone number, which is more trustworthy than "anonymous," as was previously the case with Skype.

Skype will be discontinued at the end of April 2025.
